Brookfield Central's baseball team is in the midst of an impressive turnaround season.
Just a year after finishing 7-24, the Lancers entered this week at 13-7 overall and 9-5 in Greater Metro Conference play after collecting wins over Sussex Hamilton, West Allis Hale, Shorewood and Waukesha South with a loss to Marquette mixed in.
Michael Hinz shut down Sussex Hamilton over seven innings to lead the Lancers to a 3-1 win June 19.
The senior did not allow an earned run in a complete game, giving up just four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Sussex Hamilton took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second inning. Brookfield Central tied the game on an RBI single by MJ Houdek scoring Jonathan Osman in the bottom of the third.
Houdek struck again in the fifth to give the Lancers the lead, driving in Zach Heckman and Osman with a base hit.
Brookfield Central exploded offensively in a 14-1 win over West Allis Hale on June 20.
Houdek carried over his success from the previous day by putting the Lancers on the board with a bases-clearing double in the first inning.
The Lancers scored seven times in the opening frame and added five more runs in the second inning to take a commanding 12-0 advantage.
Houdek finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Nick Leszcynski was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Adam Baade and Osman each drove in three runs.
Baade, Sal Gambatese and Dante Turkow covered the five innings on the mound, allowing just one run on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.
The Lancers fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 7-2 loss to Marquette that was shortened to 5 1/2 innings due to rain and darkness June 22.
Marquette jumped up with four runs in the first inning and scored twice more in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
Brookfield Central was held to just two hits with both coming in the fifth inning. Michael Panos reached on a single and scored two batters later on a single by Heckman.
Michael Vandenberg started for the Lancers and was hit for five runs on five hits with four walks over three innings. Turkow came on to allow two runs on four hits in three innings of relief.
A four-run fourth inning propelled Brookfield Central to a 4-3 nonconference victory over Shorewood on June 23.
Heckman started the rally in the fourth with a one-out bunt single. Houdek drove in Heckman and Baade with a two-run single. Nathan Denofre and Gambatese added RBI doubles to put the Lancers up 4-1.
The Greyhounds scored twice to pull to within 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, but Baade came in to work the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.
Gambatese allowed one run on three hits over four innings. Max Meves tossed 1 2/3 innings in relief.
Brookfield Central continued to receive strong pitching, as Heckman and Turkow combined for eight innings to help the Lancers escape with a 2-1 extra-innings win over winless Waukesha South on June 24.
Heckman gave up one run over five innings before giving way to Turkow, who held the Blackshirts scoreless for three innings to allow the Lancers to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
A busy week for the Lancers was scheduled to begin at Franklin on Monday, June 26 and at home against Menomonee Falls on Tuesday, June 27.
Brookfield Central will play at West Allis Central at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29 and will play at West Bend East at noon and at Greenfield at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 1.
